IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is a test of English language proficiency and one of the world’s most popular and respected forms of English in education and migration. There is no pass or fail in the test and your band score requirement will depend on your reason for taking the test. In order to enroll for a graduate or a post-graduate course abroad the minimum score ranges from 6 bands to 7 bands in most universities. The minimum requirement for a health professional such as the nurse is band 7 in most countries; some countries have lowered the cutoff to 6.5 bands in the writing module alone.

IELTS Test Types

There are two different types of IELTS test and once graded, your IELTS score is valid for two years. Academic IELTS is for international students who wish to study at a UK university or on other nations where English is the main language. General IELTS classes focus on English survival skills and social and workplace language. It is ideal for those who are planning to migrate to English-speaking countries such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

IELTS 9-Band Scale

Students will be given a score of 1-9 for each part of the test. Your average score produces an overall IELTS band score, and you can be graded on whole or half points.

Band 9

Expert user: Fully operational command of the language: appropriate, accurate and fluent with complete understanding.

Band 8

Very good user. Fully operational command of the language with only occasional inaccuracies and inappropriacies. Misunderstandings may occur in unfamiliar situations. Handles complex detailed argumentation well.

Band 8

Good user: Operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings in some situations. Generally handles complex language well and understands detailed reasoning.

Band 6

Competent user: Generally effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings. Can use and understand fairly complex language, particularly in familiar situations.

Band 5

Modest user: Partial command of the language, coping with overall meaning in most situations, though is likely to make many mistakes. Should be able to handle basic communication in one’s own field.

Why should you take an IELTS test?

IELTS scores are widely accepted by more than 10,000 organizations across the globe, including universities, employers, and migration authorities as valid proof of the candidate’s English proficiency.
Besides these, the test actively avoids cultural bias and treats candidates with utmost fairness. The one-on-one speaking test provides a real-life like situation in which the candidate is given an opportunity to speak naturally. It seems to be a convenient test that assesses the candidate’s English language skills almost accurately and provides no restrictions on candidates re-taking the test. Moreover, the candidate may receive their test results in 13 business days after the test. Last, but not least, the test can be accessed from any of the many test centers widely strewn across the globe either in the pen and paper format or in the CBT (Computer Based Test) format.
